Event Description:
The Promiscuous Fork opened in La Jolla in late May in Windansea Beach and the community has been a buzz since. Started by Ray Penfield (UTC resident) and Craig Sewall (La Jolla resident), who are the creators and chefs, it is a fun foodie joint. In fact, that is their tag line.
“The Fork,” as it has come to be known, started in 2006 when two buddies came together realized they both shared the same passion for good food, great friends and entertaining. They started with an idea to grill salads at the La Jolla Farmers Market. In 2008, they launched the formal Promiscuous Fork catering business doing parties in homes and for small and large functions. Opening the boutique restaurant, the proprietors found a unique way to keep their popular catering business going and also offer cooked to order meals for their growing guests/regulars.
The “buzz” has really taken off. A quote on YELP said, “I would give it six stars if I could. It is an unexpected place with a great vibe.” While another YELP post stated, “FINALLY! A great place to eat in Windansea! Tiny, cute, awesome food, nice people, easy parking, cheap! AND They serve beer and wine! Between my husband and I we have eaten there on three separate occasions within two days! Give it a try.”
For food, Ray’s favorite is the June Gloom Burger, Craig’s, the Lamb Lollypops. It is a place where you can sit back on a beach-like, Caribbean style atmosphere in the heart of Windansea Beach. Roll up windows enables guests to sit and people-watch on La Jolla Blvd., there are community tables that accompany the small bar and great tunes are playing creating a quaint intimate laid back atmosphere. One of the other stand outs is the friendly customer service where you can see the owners and chefs themselves working in the kitchen through a large glass window and they will come out and say ‘hi.’ The Promiscuous Fork has a “Cheers” style atmosphere where they ask you your name and thank you by it when you leave -- with every customer leaving feeling like they a regular.
For being open for only two weeks, the stand out customers’ favorites include, the Surf and Turf Grilled Cheese. Kailua Pork Quesadilla, Ana’s Code Blue Burger and the Lamb Lollipops. Other menu items to check out include, Pot Roast Sandwich, Bacon Wrapped BBQ Shrimp Po’Boy and the BBBLT (think lots of bacon!). As for the adult drink scene, they carry San Diego beers (on tap) as well as an array of notable bottle brands and several wine offerings, including Fallbrook Winery, trying to keep The Fork truly local. With generous portions and price point, their take out business has been off the charts since the day they opened.
