National City and the National City Host Lions Club will host the annual Fourth of July Carnival at Kimball Park from June 29 through July 4. With a history dating back more than 60 years, the carnival will feature games, rides, food and drink items for sale by local nonprofit organizations, and various entertainment throughout the week including musical acts and contests.

“National City’s annual carnival is the perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday,” said Frank Parra, a member of the National City Host Lions Club. “Events throughout the week include the Miss National City Pageant and the South Bay’s only inland fireworks display that will be sure to delight the entire family.”

The operating hours of the carnival are:

Friday, June 29 – 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday, June 30 – 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday, July 1 – 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Monday, July 2 – 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Tuesday, July 3 – 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Wednesday, July 4 -- noon to midnight (fireworks at 9 p.m.)

On Saturday evening, young women from the community will compete in the Miss National City Scholarship Pageant at 7 p.m. on the Kimball Bowl stage. The winner and her court will represent National City in various civic events throughout the year and she will be eligible for a scholarship at the end of her reign. There is no admission fee to watch the Miss National City Scholarship Pageant.

This year’s event also features Pay-One-Price Ride Days where discounted rides will be offered on Friday, Monday and Tuesday from 5 to 10 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. The price for the Pay-One-Price wristband is $20 and coupons for $4 off are available at the chamber offices, recreation centers and library. There is no admission fee to the carnival. Food, ride and game tickets can be purchased on-site.

The Fourth of July Carnival kicks off the city’s 125th Anniversary celebration. National City, which was incorporated on Sept. 17, 1887, is the second oldest city in San Diego County and a special series of events are planned to recognize its importance in the history of the county. Other events will include various family-oriented activities such as a historical home tour, Movies in the Park and Auto Heritage Day. The celebration culminates on Sept. 22 with a community picnic where residents of National City and surrounding communities are invited to Kimball Park to enjoy a day of games, activities and food.
