Event Description:
Outside the Lens, the Junior League of San Diego (JLSD) and Girl Scouts San Diego present Miss Representation, an evening event film screening and panel discussion of the documentary film that provides an inside look at how media misrepresentation of women has led to under representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The event aims to spread community awareness of this important issue in order to help advocate social change to break the cycle of female exploitation in media.
The film, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network in October, explores how violent and/or sexual depiction of the female form in media affects young women and leads to under representation of women in powerful, influential professional positions. In the film, interviews with teenage girls are interwoven with prominent leaders and media personality comments, including Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Gloria Steinem, and Dr. Caroline Heldman.
The film screening will be followed by an hour-long panel discussion facilitated by local leaders, professional media artists, and students.
