Event Description:
Pigment Gallery presents a joint exhibition of paintings by two San Diego artists, Jocelyn Duke and Amy Paul. Collectively, the artists will cast a spotlight on their synergistic themes of repetition, texture and balance.
JOCELYN DUKE
Jocelyn Duke's Grids series is a physical scorecard of thoughts and emotions she experienced while painting. Each line is a careful clue to her momentary state of thought by its choice of color and thickness of line. Purposeful clumps of paint, creating an element of texture, are scattered throughout the painting and indicate where one thought ends and another begins. The Grids visually seduce the viewer in order to evoke an emotional response. Duke veils the mundane or imperfect in an attempt to make it pretty, much like masking the truth. She is constantly questioning what is real and what is not through her work. You can view Duke’s art at

AMY PAUL
Amy Paul's series of Fragments is both sacred and mundane. Dealing with the themes of repetition, monotony, mendacity and truth, Paul applies each dotted color chip row by row, at times describing them as the metaphorical pieces of her disjointed life woven back together, stroke by stroke. Motion and light are extremely important to each piece, never letting the viewer stagnate. She asks the viewer to explore the solitude of the color fields by standing back and absorbing them from a distance, then draws them in closer to investigate the visual fracturing that occurs when near. Finally, Paul's signature layer of resin is the finishing touch, acting like a windowed barrier to the artist’s stream of consciousness, intimately close but once removed. Paul’s art can be seen at
