The "Super Bowl of Smarts" Gets Your Kids Pumped About Science and Engineering

On March 3rd and 4th, 58 Southern California high schools will bring 1500+ students, 58 life-sized robots plus teachers, mentors, sponsors and family members to compete in the 6th Annual San Diego FIRST® Robotics Regional Competition. Known as the “Super Bowl of Smarts”, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics is a program founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire more young people to get involved in science and engineering. Under strict rules, limited resources, and deadlines, high school teams of approximately 25 students design, build, and program robots in 6 weeks to compete in this local supercharged event.

Taking a page out of the book of sports, Kamen has turned science education into a high energy, high action competition. This year’s game, “Rebound Rumble”, complete with mascots and cheering sections, challenges teams' robots to play the game of basketball while transversing a field of obstacles.

In addition to watching the matches, spectators of all ages are encouraged to don a pair of borrowed safety glasses and tour the pits located on the floor of the arena to visit with teams and see their engineering know-how in action. This sporting event will produce excitement and energy for participants and spectators alike, as teams compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, sportsmanship, teamwork, and more.

When: March 3 - 4, 2012
PLEASE NOTE: It's a casual 2 day event, so show up at whatever time suits your family during the below hours. It's designed to be a come-and-go-as-you-please weekend event.
