Editorial Review of
Old Point Loma Lighthouse
Keeping watch over the San Diego Bay since it was first illuminated in 1855, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse shined for only 36 years. After fog and clouds had obscured the light beyond recognition due to it’s elevated location, the location of the light house was moved in 1891 to a closer point on the shore. While still looking over San Diego, the lighthouse is now dark but still stands as a memory of it’s interesting history. The interior has since been reversely refurbished, made to look identical to it’s historical 1880’s self. A visit to the lighthouse is able to bring visitors directly into the past, as the scenery looks virtually unchanged since it was built over 130 years ago. Park rangers are able to give guests a guided tour of the structure, while displays and the location do the rest of the talking. If you are already at the beach, taking a trip to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse may be a great way to cap off the evening. This is a perfect place to bring children and teach them about local history, as it comes alive before their eyes.
