Editorial Review of
Mount Soledad
Mount Soledad in La Jolla is one of the most scenic places you can visit. From the top of Mt. Soledad hill the view of the city and ocean below is breath taking and it is the perfect place to spend time with family friends and loved ones. What most people don't know is that the cross sitting atop Mt. Soledad has been the center of great controversy concerning its legality. It is argued that the cross violates the first amendment of the constitution because Mt. Soledad is public land. Despite the court cases, vandalism and attacks the cross has fallen under since its first erection in 1913, its been converted into a memorial to the Korean War. In 2011 the cross was ruled unconstitutional by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit but is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court. Regardless of the controversy, Mt. Soledad continues to stand as a representation of La Jolla's rich history and has withstood the test of time and cultural change.
